To quote Oxford University Press, "Nomic statements, like 'All bodies
attract each other with a force inversely proportional to the square of the
distance between them', are generally thought both universal
and necessary."
Nomological is a
term from Greek philosophy, which, loosely interpreted, is a fancy word that
you could use to describe a very opinionated person unafraid to take a stand on
issues. When applied to the artistic world, nomological individuals make
value judgments about the merits of one piece of art another on an
absolute basis. "This is one of the best books of all time."
"This list ranks the best films of all time." They are
unafraid
At the other extreme are the
devotees of relativism, who subscribe to the philosophy of hermeneutics,
maintaining that interpretations are relative to a particular time or
situation. Hermeneutics is sometimes equated with moral relativism and
is often opposed to applying systematic methods of study to value art.
"This is just as food as that." "You have no right to say
that this book is intrinsically better than that one."
I believe that Aristotle's Aesthetics is still alive in our age.
Some
artistic endeavors are qualitatively better than others because they are just
that - better. They were better five hundred years ago, and some books or movies
from last week are better than others.
My home page on the net highlights the best art of
all time and the best of that nebulous phenomenon that we call
"Post-Modernism". You might even learn a
little bit about me
along the way.
I invite you to browse, hyperlink, get opinionated and introduce yourself
to new ideas.
